3 day excursion Ancient Olympia - Methoni - Kalamata

Our journey begins for the enchanting Peloponnese, on the south side of Greece, which has amazing landscapes. Our destination is Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The route to our destination is magical, combining mountain and sea.

We could not miss a stop by the Corinthian Isthmus, the famous canal that divides the Saronic Gulf with the Corinthian Gulf and is 6.346m long. The view is great and if we are lucky, we will see one of the 12,000 ships passing through the canal annually.

We will continue our journey to Ancient Olympia, the homeland of the Olympic Games. After we get there, we will have lunch and then we will tour and explore the archaeological site of Olympia, which is the most glorious sanctuary of ancient Greece. In 776 BC, the first Olympic Games took place in Antiquity. In the archaeological site, we will explore the temple of Zeus, the ancient stadium of Olympia, where sports events took place, the Olympian rectorate, the ancient Olympia assembly, the temple of Hera, and many more important monuments.

After our tour in the archaeological site, we will go to the hotel where we will stay. The next day, after breakfast at the hotel, we will board the bus and continue our journey to the beautiful Messinia. Our first stop will be in the village of Methoni. On that place, there is one of the most important fortresses of Greek territory, the castle of Methoni. There is also a natural harbour, which in the Middle Ages was a stop on the way of pilgrims to the Holy Land and also of the merchant ships. In the castle, you will see preserved buildings, such as the Church of Sotiros and the Ottoman baths.

Then, we will continue our journey to Finikounda village, a seaside settlement near Methoni, with tourist interest, where we will stop to have lunch. After lunch, the bus will take us to the final destination of the second day, the beautiful coastal town of Kalamata. After arriving at the hotel, we will be given the opportunity to walk and rest on the beautiful beach of Kalamata.

The next morning, we will board the bus to ancient Messinia. There, we will be guided to its archaeological site which has the most well-preserved monuments, the Asklepieion, the ancient theatre, the stadium and the ruins of the Early Byzantine royal church as well as the fortification that will impress you.

After the tour, we will have lunch in the city of Kalamata, from which we will return full of new experiences and memories to Athens.
